Virginia Golfers Set to Defend Cavalier Classic Title

Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team wraps up the 2008 regular season when it plays host to the 21st annual Cavalier Classic at the par-72, 6,879-yard Birdwood Golf Course April 26 and 27. The Cavaliers are the defending champions for the event. The 36-hole tournament will feature 18 holes of competition on Saturday and Sunday. Both rounds will begin at 8 a.m. from the first tee.
The 21-team field for this year’s tournament includes Appalachian State, Augusta State, Delaware, East Carolina, Elon, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Maryland, NC State, Old Dominion, Princeton, Radford, St. Joseph’s, Temple, Tennessee State, Seton Hall, UNCG and Virginia.
The Cavaliers are scheduled to begin play Saturday at 10:15 a.m. and will be paired with NC State and Augusta State.
The Cavaliers ran away with last year’s championship, shooting 868. UNCG was second at 892. The Spartans’ Drew Younts took medalist honors at 2-under 214. Greg Carlin was Virginia’s top finisher in third place at 217. All five of UVa’s scoring players finished in the top 10. It marked the fifth time Virginia has won the tournament. The Cavaliers also took home the championship trophy in 1997, 1995, 1990 and 1988.
Virginia’s lineup will include Will Collins, Steven Rojas, Greg Carlin, Kyle Stough and Conrad Von Borsig. Henry Smart and Amory Davis will play as non-scoring individuals.
