CHARLOTTESVILLE – The 14th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team hosts Manhattan in a 2 p.m. Sunday contest at John Paul Jones Arena. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com, and the game will be broadcast over the airwaves on WINA 1070 in the Charlottesville area with Jay James, Myron Ripley and Larry Johnson calling the action.

Virginia (1-0) is coming off of a 68-57 victory over UMBC on Friday (Nov. 13). The win gave UVa head coach Debbie Ryan her 700th-career victory, as she became the seventh active coach with at least 700 wins. Ryan, a 2008 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, has compiled a 700-298 record and is now in her 33rd season at the helm.

Against the Retrievers in the season-opener, Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) scored all of her 15 points in the second half and keyed a second-half 13-0 run that lifted UVa to victory. Wright has been tabbed the ACC Preseason Player of the Year as well as an Associated Press Preseason All-American.

Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) added 12 points for the Cavaliers, and hauled down seven rebounds for a solid outing. Sophomore Whitny Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) was the third Cavaliers in double-digit points, as she netted 11.

Virginia leads the all-time series with Manhattan, 1-0. The teams met on March 15, 1996 in the NCAA Tournament and Virginia was victorious by a score of 100-55.

The Jaspers (1-0) defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) in their season-opener, 71-34. Michelle Pacheco led three double-digit scorers with 19 points and four assists.

Manhattan head coach John Olenowski is in his first season.

Sunday is the first of three-consecutive home games for Virginia. The Cavaliers host USC Upstate on Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Tennessee on Sunday, Nov. 22.

General Admission tickets are still available for the Virginia vs. Tennessee women’s basketball game on Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. In an effort to set a new UVa single-game attendance record, the contest between the Cavaliers and Lady Vols is Hot Dog Day and every fan in attendance will receive a coupon for a free Gwaltney hot dog and a 12-ounce Pepsi.
