CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The second-ranked Virginia baseball team travels to Maryland this weekend for a three-game series at Shipley Field. Because of anticipated rain on Saturday and Sunday, the teams now will play two games Friday. The first game will start at 3 p.m., with the second game following 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The third game of the series will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The teams were originally scheduled to play at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Virginia is ranked No. 3 in the second RPI report, which was released Tuesday by the NCAA. Arizona State and Arkansas top the rankings. UVa rose from No. 5 in the first RPI this year. Virginia has eight wins against the RPI top 50 so far this year – UVa’s strength of schedule is fifth nationally according to WarrenNolan.com.

The Cavaliers (31-9, 12-6 ACC) head to Maryland with a pair of midweek wins in tow. UVa knocked off Richmond, 11-3, Tuesday night before scoring a 10-3 victory over George Mason Wednesday.

Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks eighth in the ACC with a .391 batting average. He leads the conference in hits with 63 and ranks sixth in stolen bases (13), eighth in batting and 10th in on base percentage (.477).

Maryland (15-25, 4-14) split its midweek contests this week, winning 14-9 at Old Dominion Tuesday before dropping a 3-1 decision to Towson Wednesday. Brandon Padula leads the Terrapins with a .396 batting average, which ranks sixth in the ACC. Maryland ranks 12th in the ACC with a .259 batting average and 11th in ERA at 6.26.

Virginia maintains a 98-73-1 lead in the all-time series with Maryland – it marks UVa’s most wins against any ACC opponent. The Cavaliers own a 17-1 record against Maryland under the current coaching staff (since 2004) – the only loss came April 4, 2009, at Davenport Field.

The Cavaliers return to Davenport Field for a pair of midweek contests next week. UVa will take on No. 8 Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Georgetown at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
