GUANGZHOU, China – Cavalier senior Sanam Singh and Virginia alumnus Somdev Devvarman teamed to win the doubles gold medal at the 16th Asian Games. The duo topped the Chinese team of Maoxin Gong and Zhe Li 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-8 in Monday’s final.

Both players were also members of the Indian team that won the bronze medal in the team event earlier in the games.

It is the second consecutive doubles gold medal for India, as world top 10 players Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the title for India in Doha, Qatar in 2006.

Devvarman will look to become the first Indian player to win the singles gold at the Asian Games on Tuesday as he plays world No. 40 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the final. In Monday’s singles semifinal, Devvarman, ranked No. 106 in the world, topped world No. 202 Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.
