Charlottesville, VA – Virginia NCAA Champion Robby Andrews will make his outdoor season debut for the Cavalier Track & Field team Saturday at the George Mason Spring Invitational. Andrews will race in the 800 meters, an event he won at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships and was the runner up in at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

“We can’t wait to see Robby run on Saturday night,” said Virginia director of track and field Jason Vigilante. “It’s the first step to get him prepared for the major races this year.”

Vigilante said Andrews’ performance, as an unattached runner at a meet at William & Mary last weekend, showed he was back to his top form.

“A week ago Robby won his race in 1:49.5 and that’s just what we needed to feel assured he is ready to compete in the Virginia jersey again,” Vigilante said. “Up until that point, a nagging foot injury prevented Robby from running cross country and indoors. He’s now back to training at full strength and we are really looking forward to him getting back to his championship form.

“Robby has really worked hard through this injury and I’m so proud of him for staying focused and giving us added opportunities to score at the ACC and NCAA championships.”

Saturday, Andrews will be joined by the Cavaliers’ distance runners in Fairfax, Va., while UVa’s sprinters, jumpers and throwers will head to Athens, Ga., for the Spec Towns Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
