Andrews Named Penn Relays Athlete of the Meet for Relay Events

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Virginia All-American Robby Andrews was named the College Men’s Athlete of the Meet for Relay Events at the 117th running of the Penn Relays. Andrews, a sophomore from Englishtown, N.J., anchored the Cavaliers’ 4x800m relay team to its second-straight Championship of America relay title in front of 48,836 fans Saturday afternoon.

The 2010 NCAA Indoor Champion in the 800m used his trademark kick to outdistance Penn State’s Casimir Loxsom in the final 150 meters of the race to lead the Cavaliers to victory. Virginia’s team of sophomore Brett Johnson, junior All-American Lance Roller and freshman ACC Champion Anthony Kostelac joined Andrews in the event, as the quartet finished with the second-fastest relay time in Penn Relays history.

The foursome combined to finish in 7:12.15, trailing only Penn State’s legendary meet record of 7:11.17 from 1985. The mark also shatters Virginia’s 30-year-old school record, set at 7:14.59 in 1981, while it is the top time in the NCAA this season – third-fastest of all-time – and the seventh fastest 4x800m relay run in US outdoor track and field history.

Andrews becomes the second Cavalier in program history to be named an athlete of the meet at the Penn Relays, while he is the first male to be honored. Virginia’s Ann Bair was named the Penn Relays Individual Athlete of the Meet in 1983. Bair cleared 6′ 2″ in the high jump, a meet record that stood for eight years.
