Four Cavaliers Reach Finals in 200 Freestyle at U.S. Nationals

STANFORD, Calif. – Four Cavaliers reached the finals of the 200-meter freestyle at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships Wednesday, highlighted by a second-place finish by former Virginia swimmer Matt McLean. The event, which runs through Saturday, is being held at the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif.
McLean, who claimed the national title in the 400-meter freestyle Tuesday night, was joined by former Cavalier Scot Robison and rising senior Peter Geissinger in the 200-meter freestyle final. Robison took fourth in a time of 1:48.49 while Geissinger placed 10th in 1:49.70.
Rising third-year Lauren Perdue represented the UVa women in the 200-meter freestyle final and placed seventh, touching in 1:59.69. She was second out of the morning session with a time of 1:59.29. Teammate Rachel Naurath, a rising sophomore, swam in the consolation final and turned in a 16th-place finish with a time of 2:01.05. She was also faster during the preliminaries (2:00.83).
Incoming freshman Ellen Williamson got the night started for Virginia with a 19th-place performance in the 100-meter backstroke. She finished in 1:02.58.
Rising third-year Matt Houser then concluded day two of the national championships with his 17th-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly, touching in 2:01.26.
Day three of the ConocoPhillips National Championships continues Thursday. Preliminaries begin at 12 p.m. Eastern (9 a.m. Pacific) with finals scheduled for 9 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. Pacific). All sessions will be webcast live at www.usaswimming.org/nationals.
