ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia freshman Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. The organization announces its national award winners annually at a ceremony the morning of the NCAA Tournament final.

Frank becomes the second Cavalier to be named ITA Rookie of the Year, joining teammate Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), who took the honor last year.

Frank is currently ranked No. 2 nationally in singles and has posted a 34-1 record during his debut season. In the fall, he won the singles title at both major national tournaments, the ITA All-American Championship and ITA National Indoor Championship. He is just the fourth player in history to win both titles in the same year, joining MaliVai Washington of Michigan in 1988-89, Sargis Sargsian of Arizona State in 1994-95 and James Blake of Harvard in 1998-99.

Last month Frank was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and was also an All-ACC selection.

Frank and the Cavaliers (29-1) will look to win their first NCAA Championship tonight as they meet USC (32-1) in the final. Match time at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Georgia is 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast live online at

On Wednesday, Frank will begin play in the NCAA Singles Championship. He is the No. 2 seed in the 64-player field.
