CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia freshman swimmer Nick Alexiou has been named to the 2012-13 USA Swimming National Junior Team. With the honor, Alexiou will be invited to a training camp at the Olympic Training Center in the spring.

“We are very proud of Nick being named to the National Junior Team,” UVa head coach Mark Bernardino said. “This is a great accomplishment for this young man. We knew he was a very gifted athlete when we recruited him and this honor only accents that point.”

This year’s U.S. National Junior Team is comprised of all members of the 2012 Junior Pan Pac Team in addition to the those with the top six times from the combined results of the Olympic Trials, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2012 USA Swimming Junior Nationals.

The Clearwater Beach, Fla., native earned the selection as a result of his 200-meter freestyle time, 1:51.05, and his 400m free mark, 3:56.49, at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the end of July. Alexiou won the 200-meter freestyle at the 2011 Speedo Junior National Championships.

“Being named to the National Junior Team is such an honor,” Alexiou said. “I can’t wait to make an impact and represent my country.”
