ATLANTA–Georgia Tech defeated the Virginia volleyball team, 29-27, 25-11 and 25-20, Saturday night (Oct. 6) at O’Keefe Gym in Atlanta.
Georgia Tech (13-4, 5-2 ACC) controlled the Cavaliers (5-12, 0-7 ACC), hitting .264 and 41 kills compared to .054 and 29 kills for UVa.
Senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) led the Cavaliers with seven kills and a .250 hitting percentage.
In the first set. Georgia Tech had a 23-21 lead, but a kill by freshman Vivian Burcescu (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and a GT hitting error tied the score, forcing a timeout. Out of the timeout, Georgia Tech earned a set point, but an O’Shoney kill tied it up at 24.
The Cavaliers staved off another two set points and earned one of their own on a sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) kill, but Georgia Tech responded with three points in a row to win the frame, 29-27.
GT earned eight out of the first nine points of the second set on the way to a 25-11 win. The Yellow Jackets hit .522 in the set with 14 kills and two errors, while UVa hit -.036 with six kills and seven errors.
In the third, Georgia Tech had a 14-10 lead, but the Cavaliers came back with five consecutive points to get back in the set. After the score was tied at 18, GT earned five in a row
Monique Mead led Georgia Tech with 12 kills and a six blocks, while Annie Carnecki had seven blocks.
Up next, the Cavaliers host North Carolina and NC State on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13, respectively. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m., at Memorial Gymnasium.
