Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s golf team plays its second tournament of the week when the Cavaliers tee it up starting Friday at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. The three-day, 54-hold event is held at the par-72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club.

Hosted by Georgia Southern, the tournament is named after former Emmy Award winning sports broadcaster Chris Schenkel.

The field for the Schenkel Invitational includes (Golfstat ranking): Alabama (6), UAB, Central Florida (37), College of Charleston, Florida (8), Georgia Southern, Kentucky, Maryland, Ole Miss, North Florida (16), North Texas (32), Notre Dame, Texas (4), Vanderbilt (36) and Virginia.

The Cavalier lineup will include Mac McLaughlin, Denny McCarthy, Nick Tremps, Ji Soo Park and Alex Lloyd.

Last season UVa’s Ben Kohles took medalist honors at the Schenkel Invitational by shooting a school-record 18-under 198. Kohles had rounds of 65, 66 and 67. He joined a list of notable former winners of the tournament including Bubba Watson, Scott Verplank, Bob Tway, Hal Sutton, Curtis Strange and Andy Bean. Only Wake Forest’s Chris Kite posted a lower score at the event, shooting 21-under 195 in 1986 to claim medalist honors.

Alabama won the team title at 47-under 817 while Virginia was second at 25-under 839.
