Virginia Hosts Cavalier Classic This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia Volleyball team hosts the annual Cavalier Classic this weekend (Sept. 20-21) at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers will face Seton Hall on Friday at 7 p.m., before playing Columbia and William & Mary on Saturday at noon and 7 p.m., respectively.
The Lions and Tribe face off Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the Pirates and Tribe competing Saturday at 10 a.m. Columbia and Seton Hall will play Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Fans who attend Saturday’s UVa football game against VMI can bring their ticket stubs and receive free admission to either of Saturday’s volleyball matches against Columbia and William & Mary (based on availability). Live stats for all six matches will be available through VirginiaSports.com.
Single-match general admission tickets are $5. Youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission tickets are $4 and group tickets (20 or more) are $3 per ticket. Fans can order tickets online at VirginiaSports.com and by phone through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 800-542-UVA1 (8821) or 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets are also available at the gate beginning one hour prior to the start of each match.
Game-day parking for volleyball matches is available free of charge at the Culbreth Road Garage, located behind Carr’s Hill Field. Limited parking is available at the Central Grounds Garage (hourly rates apply).
UVa (4-5) dropped all three matches last weekend at the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky. The Cavaliers fell to the host Hilltoppers, 3-1, on Sept. 13 and to UNLV (3-1) and Ohio (3-2) last Saturday.
The Lions (1-5) went 1-2 last weekend, defeating Fordham (3-1), but falling to Boston College (3-2) and Bighamton (3-2). Atlanta Moye-McLaren leads CU with 3.38 kills per set. Virginia won the only other meeting between the programs, 3-0, in 2001 at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Pirates (3-5) have won their last two matches, defeating Rutgers (3-2) and Princeton (3-0). Amanda Hansen leads SHU with 2.49 kills per set. Friday night’s match will be the first meeting all-time between the schools in volleyball.
The Tribe (4-7) won its last match against Norfolk State, 3-0, on Tuesday. Liz Brown leads the offense with 3.23 kills per set. William & Mary leads the all-time series, 21-18, but UVa has won the last three meetings, including the last, 3-0, in 2004 in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers open ACC play on the road next weekend against Duke (Sept. 27) and Wake Forest (Sept. 28).
