CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team announced its spring schedule for 2014 on Monday. The slate is designed to challenge the veteran Cavalier squad and features five exhibition contests, including three matches against professional teams as well as two contests against college sides that played in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

“We’re excited for our upcoming spring schedule,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “With a strong core of players returning from last year’s College Cup team, we really wanted to challenge them with great competition and this will do that.”

Virginia will travel to play against three pro teams, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer Leagues (March 8), Richmond Kickers of USL (March 22) and the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (April 5). Former UVa All-American Alecko Eskandarian is an assistant coach with the Cosmos.

The Cavaliers also will play ACC rival North Carolina on March 29 at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. Virginia’s lone home exhibition of the spring schedule is April 12 against VCU at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers will wrap up the spring schedule on April 19 when they split up the roster with the Blue vs. Orange Scrimmage at 11 a.m. at Klöckner Stadium. There is no admission charge for the home spring matches.

In advancing to the NCAA College Cup for the 11th time in program history in 2013, Virginia went 13-6-5 while reaching the ACC championship game and finishing the year ranked as high as fourth nationally. The Cavaliers return nine starters from that squad, including 93 percent of their scoring as well as three experienced goalkeepers in Calle Brown, Jeff Gal and Spencer LaCivita.
