Virginia Drops Pair of Games at Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games to conclude the Mary Nutter Classic Saturday (Feb. 22), falling to Fresno State, 11-10, and No. 6 Oregon, 12-3 in six innings.
In the first game, the Cavaliers (2-11) had their highest scoring output of the season, 10 runs, but Fresno State came from behind to win, 11-10.
After the Bulldogs opened up a 7-1 lead after two innings, the Cavaliers scored seven runs in the third to take an 8-7 lead. Freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) walked with the bases loaded to score senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) singled to score freshman Kinza Baad (Washington, D.C.) to cut the lead to 7-3.
Following a strikeout, freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) doubled to score junior Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.) and Labshere. Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) singled home Park and junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) doubled to right-center field to plate Mayer and Hughes.
Fresno State regained the lead in the fourth, but in the fifth, Labshere hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to give the Cavaliers a 10-9 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game in the sixth on a groundout by Stesha Brazil, who had four RBI on the day, and won the game in the seventh when Brooke Ortiz singled home Christina Rodriguez with two outs.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed seven runs (four earned) in 2.2 innings of work, while Mayer (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs in 4.0 frames of relief.
Jill Compton (5-3) got the last two outs of the Cavaliers’ rally in the third and pitched the next four innings, allowing two runs with two strikeouts.
Against Oregon, the Ducks scored in five of six innings and 14 hits to win, 12-3. Senior Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, but 11 Ducks recorded hits and six drove in at least one run.
Chapdelaine (2-10) allowed seven runs in three innings, while Mayer gave up five in 2.2 innings of relief.
Jasmine Smithson-Willett (1-0) pitched six innings and allowed three runs to earn the win for Oregon.
The Cavaliers begin Atlantic Coast Conference play next weekend, when they travel to NC State for a three-game series March 1-2.
