No. 5 Virginia Sweeps Nine Races at UVa Invitational

LAKE MONTICELLO, Va.–The No. 5 Virginia rowing team swept nine races at the UVa Invitational Saturday (April 26) on Lake Monticello. The regatta marked the final home competition for 15 Cavaliers, who were honored in a brief ceremony after the action.
“Overall, a great day for Virginia rowing and a good send-off for our seniors by winning every race today,” UVa assistant coach Joshua Gautreau said. “Thanks to Duke, Syracuse, Michigan State and George Mason for coming.”
After dropping two races last week at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight bounced back and picked up wins over No. 17 Syracuse (6:30.6-6:39.7) and Michigan State (6:33.0-6:37.9). Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight defeated the Orange (6:32.7-6:45.7) and Spartans (6:33.0-6:52.8).
“Today we able to show how deep our team is,” UVa assistant coach Brett Sickler said. “After a tough weekend up at Michigan last week, the team really responded with a good week in practice which turned into some solid results today.”
“A big thanks to the Lake Monticello community for allowing us to host, it was a picture-perfect day for rowing,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “Also a shout out to our fourth-years like Mary Nilan and Emily Pik, who have epitomized a team-first attitude this spring!”
In the Varsity Four races, both of UVa’s crews defeated Michigan State (7:18.7-7:20.8-7:29.4), while Syracuse placed second against two Cavalier crews (7:19.6-7:25.4-7:31.3).
Virginia Third and Fourth Varsity Eights defeated George Mason in the morning (6:44.2-6:54.7-7:03.4), while the Fifth Varsity Eight placed ahead of Duke and UVa’s Sixth Varsity Eight (6:58.9-6:59.5-7:17.5). In the last race of the day, Virginia’s Third and Fourth Varsity Eights defeated Syracuse’s 3V8 (6:46.5-6:51.1-6:57.9). UVa’s 5V8 and 6V8 competed against each other in the first session, with the 5V8 coming up with the win (7:04.8-7:16.8).
Next up, the Cavaliers will travel to Clemson, S.C., for the ACC Championships on May 16-17. Virginia has captured four consecutive conference titles and has won 13 of the 14 ACC regattas.
