ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia men’s tennis team concluded the 2014 season Thursday as Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) lost in the NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. Shane suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to second-seeded Marcos Giron of UCLA in the second round.

Shane, who was the only Cavalier to win his first round match Wednesday, took the opening set, 6-3, using a late break of Giron’s serve. The second set featured both players trading breaks early before Giron used a late break to win the set and even the match. The final set was on serve when Shane had a break point at 4-3. Giron saved the point, held serve and broke Shane in the ensuing game. Giron held serve to close out the match.

The loss marks the first time since 2005 that the Cavaliers have not had a player reach the round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Championship.
