Oct. 12, 2014 Chapel Hill, N.C. – Virginia sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) took top honors at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., to pick up her first collegiate victory. Diaz-Yi used three birdies during Sunday’s final round of play to pull away from the field for the win.

Diaz-Yi shot 2-under 70 during the final round for a 54-hole total of 7-under 209. She finished four shots ahead of Vanderbilt’s Kendall Martindale. Diaz-Yi opened the tournament by shooting 70 and posted a second-round score of 3-under 69, which matched her low 18-hole score as a collegiate. Her final round tally was five strokes better than her previous best tournament score.

Diaz-Yi becomes the first Cavalier to win a tournament title since Brittany Altomare captured the ACC Championship in 2013. She is the sixth player in the history of the program to claim medalist honors. She tied the UVa tournament scoring record for a sophomore and was just one stroke shy of equalling the Cavaliers’ all-time low 54-hole score.

Sparked by Diaz-Yi’s play, the 22nd-ranked Cavaliers finished sixth in the 18-team field. UVa shot 8-over 296 Sunday for a three-day total of 19-over 883. Duke took top honors at 2-under 862.

UVa’s Briana Mao was 19th overall at 220 while Lauren Coughlin placed 46th at 227, Elizabeth Szokol was 64th at 231 and Lyberty Anderson was 85th at 237. Sarah Kolodzik, playing as a non-scoring individual, was 80th at 234.

Virginia wraps up the fall portion of its schedule in Wilmington, N.C., when the Cavaliers compete in The Landfall Tradition on Oct. 24-26.
