CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 2014 Orange & Blue World Series came to a conclusion Sunday as the Blue team captured the series, winning six of the seven games. The final three games were played over the weekend, with the Blue team winning each by counts of 12-1, 4-1 and 9-5.
As champions of the World Series, the members of the Blue team will eat a steak dinner during the team’s annual holiday party, while members of the Orange team get hot dogs.
On Friday night prior to Game 5, Virginia celebrated the 2014 NCAA runner-up team as members of the program were given their College World Series rings.
Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) finished off a big series with hits in all three weekend games, including a four-hit, four-run performance in the Blue team’s blowout win in Game 5. Towns hit a series-best .469 with 15 hits over the course of the seven games.
Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) batted .357 with 10 hits, including five doubles and a home run while spending time on both teams.
Game 5: Blue 12, Orange 1
The Blue scored six runs in the fifth inning in rolling to the 12-1 victory. Towns went 4-for-5, while Thaiss hit three doubles and drove in four runs. Freshman Derek Casey (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned the win after allowing a run and three hits over five innings.
Game 6: Blue 4, Orange 1
The Blue broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning. Thaiss snapped the tie with a two-run home run to right-center. Christian Lowry (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) added a pair of hits in the win for the Blue team. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) hit two singles for the Orange.
Connor Jones (So., Chesapeake, Va.) allowed three hits and a run over five innings to earn for the Blue, while Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) tossed a perfect seventh inning to pick up a save.
Game 7: Blue 9, Orange 5
The Blue finished off the series with a 9-5 win in Game 7 on Sunday. The Blue racked up 14 hits, with each starter finishing with at least one. Thomas Woodruff (Sr., Clifton, Va.) recorded four hits, including a home run. Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) also homered and scored twice for the Blue.
Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) had three hits and three RBI for the Orange, while Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) also had three hits.
Nathan Kirby (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) worked five innings and allowed two runs and five hits while striking out five in earning the win for the Blue, while Brandon Waddell (Jr., Houston, Texas) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) and seven hits in five innings for the Orange.
