TORONTO, Canada – Virginia men’s tennis junior Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) and freshman Carl Soderlund competed at the Donalda Men’s $25,000 Futures Tournament in Toronto, Canada. The main draw began on Monday, Sept. 5 with the championship match slated for Sunday, Sept. 11.

Ritschard advanced through qualifying into the main draw where he made it to the semifinals before falling to Ivan Endara. Söderlund, currently at No. 439 in the world ATP rankings, earned the No. 7 seed in the main draw and advanced to the second round.

Ritschard downed Liam Draxl 6-1, 6-4 and Egor Koleganov 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in qualifying to advance to the main draw. Ritschard won 7-6 (5), 6-3 over Canadian Pavel Krainik on Tuesday morning to advance to the second round of the main draw where he dispatched Filip Peliwo 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. Ritschard dominated his semifinal match, dispatching fellow-qualifier Jonathan Change 6-1, 6-0. Ritschard edged Endara in the first set 7-6 (4), but the Ecuadorian came back to take the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3, to end Ritschard’s run.

Söderlund opened the tournament with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Alejandro Tabilo, picking up six breaks from six looks, before falling 6-4, 6-1 to Rhyne Williams in the second round.

Former Cavalier Jarmere Jenkins also played in the tournament, competing in both doubles and singles. Jenkins advanced to the second round of singles before falling to fifth-seeded Jose Statham, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 and made it through to the semifinals in doubles.
