MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico – Virginia men’s tennis senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) won the singles title on Saturday (Dec. 24) at the Mayaguez $10,000 Pro Futures Tournament in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

It was the first pro singles title of Kwiatkowski’s career after earning two pro doubles titles this summer at the Charlottesville and Winston-Salem Futures Tournaments. Kwiatkowski had advanced the singles semifinals in four other Futures tournaments this year, but this was his first championship.

Kwiatkowski, who was the No. 6 seed in the tournament, defeated Rafael Grovas 6-2, 6-1 in the first round before downing Isaiah Strode 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals where he defeated Vasil Kirkov 6-1, 6-3. In the semifinals, Kwiatkowski dropped the first set 6-4 to fourth-seeded and former Tar Heel Brayden Schnur, but rallied to take the final two sets 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the final. In Saturday’s championship match, Kwiatkowski defeated seventh-seeded Alexios Halebian 6-1, 6-4, after picking up five breaks from six looks.

Kwiatkowski also competed in doubles, partnering with Nicholas Hu. The tandem fell in the semifinals.
