Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia women’s golf program is represented by five current and former players at this week’s 116th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The tournament runs Monday through Sunday at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.

Four current Cavaliers join former UVA standout Lauren Greenlief in this year’s 156-player field. Rising sophomores Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.), Lyndsey Hunnell (Troutville, Va.) and junior Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.) advanced to the tournament through sectional qualifying events.

Greenlief is one of 24 exempt players in the field. She gained her exemption to this year’s event and next year’s tournament by virtue of winning the 2015 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Following 18-hole rounds of stroke play on Aug. 1-2, the field will be cut to the 64 players for match play. Six 18-hole rounds of match play will determine the champion.

The USGA received a record 1,381 entries for the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur, breaking the previous mark of 1,303 that was set in 2015. The championship is open to female amateur golfers who have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 5.4. Entries closed on June 15, 2016.
