Final Stats

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Virginia men’s tennis team had five players competing at the Georgia Tech Invitational, held Friday through Sunday, Nov. 3-5, at Georgia Tech’s Ken Byer’s Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.

Freshman Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) advanced to the Old Gold singles bracket final after opening the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Georgia Tech’s Michael Kay and then picking up two victories on Saturday, downing Andrei Andrukhou of Georgia State 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 and South Carolina’s Yancy Dennis 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Lord fell 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to top-seeded Carlos Divar of Georgia Tech in Sunday’s final. Lord finished the fall with an 8-3 record in singles.

Redshirt freshman Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) rebounded from a loss in his opening match by advancing to the consolation final of the Old Gold singles bracket with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Georgia State’s Jack MacFarlane and a 6-2, 6-4 win over Auburn’s Olle Thestrup on Saturday. Alhaqbani fell 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 to South Carolina’s Thomas Mayronne in Sunday’s consolation final. Alhaqbani finished the fall with a 5-5 record in singles.

In the White Singles bracket, freshmen Jefferson Dockter (Atlanta, Ga.) opened the tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 (0-4) victory over Auburn’s Alex Mascioli but dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Georgia State’s Quentin Couland in the quarterfinals. He was edge in a Saturday consolation match by South Carolina’s Thomas Brown 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2).

Freshman Jerome Romualdez (Manila, Philippines) took three losses in the tournament, falling to Georgia Stat’s Kevin Huynh and Andrei Duarte and Georgia Tech’s Brandon Freestone.

Freshman Ethan Moszkowski (New York, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut at the tournament, partnering with Dockter in doubles. Lord and Romualdez also partnered in doubles. Both tandems went 0-3 in the tournament.

The Georgia Tech Invitational was the final collegiate tournament on the fall schedule for the Cavaliers. The team will open the spring dual season on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Richmond at 5 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
