Two Virginia Alums Competing at the Australian Open

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Two Virginia men’s tennis alums, Treat Huey ’08 and Dominic Inglot ’09, are competing in the main draw of men’s doubles at the Australian Open.
This is the 35th consecutive Grand Slam in which a Cavalier has competed in a main draw match.
Inglot, partnering with Marcus Daniell of New Zealand, made it through to the quarterfinals. The tandem picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Adil Shamasdin and Neal Skupski in the first round and took down Hugo Nys and Benoit Paire of France in the second round, 6-4, 6-2. After topping Hans Podlipnik-Castillo of Chile and Andrei Vasilevski of Belarus 6-4, 6-3 in the third round, before being edged 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 by seven-seed Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic in the quarterfinals. This was Inglot’s third trip to the quarters at the Australian Open after also making it in 2014 and 2015. His best ever finish in a Grand Slam was as a semifinalist in the US Open in 2015.
Huey, who had to pull out of the US Open with an injury, returned to Grand Slam play by partnering with Brazil’s Marcelo Demoliner. The two fell to 15-seed Marcin Matkowski and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, 7-6 (8), 6-4, in the opening round.
