CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s tennis team (5-3, 0-0 ACC) returns from an 11-day break to host Mercer (7-1, 0-0 SoCon) on Friday, February 23 at 11 a.m. at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Admission is free for all Virginia home tennis matches. Live scoring and streaming video will be available through a link on VirginiaSports.com.

In the Cavaliers’ last matches on Feb. 11, the team swept a doubleheader, picking up a 4-2 victory over Monmouth and a 6-1 win over Liberty. Freshmen Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) and Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) and junior Aswin Lizen each picked up a pair of singles victories on the day. Ross is 6-1 in singles this spring, including a 5-0 mark at No. 2. Lizen is 7-0 this spring and 19-1 overall and is currently ranked No. 18 in the latest ITA singles rankings.

Mercer opened the spring with a 4-0 loss to Georgia State but has rattled off seven straight wins since, including back-to-back 7-0 victories over Georgia Southwestern State and Berry College. Sam Philp leads the team with a 4-1 record at No. 1.

This is the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Virginia has played its first nine matches of the spring season on its home courts, but will hit the road next week, playing at Louisville in the conference-opener on Friday, March 2 at 4 p.m. The Cavaliers return home on March 16 and 18, hosting Boston College and Notre Dame.
