Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Virginia men’s tennis junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) was eliminated in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday (May 23) at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Lizen, an at-large selection to the 64-player singles field, fell 7-6(5), 6-3 to Alabama’s Mazen Osama. The two players held serve through the first set, forcing a tiebreaker with Osama picking up a late advantage to win it. Osama picked up an early break in the second set and held on for the 6-3 victory.

Lizen finishes the season with a 32-7 record in singles. Lizen was the ITA Atlantic Regional Singles champion and advanced to the Round of 16 at the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships. He went 18-6 this spring in singles, including posting a 9-3 record in conference matches. This is his first appearance in the singles tournament.

Osama, a 9-16 seed in the singles championship, is currently ranked No. 10 in singles. The junior was named the ITA National Player to Watch this week, as well as twice earning the regional honor.
