CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s tennis team is hosting the UVA Masters tournament Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
 
Saturday’s action included the finals of the doubles draw as well as two rounds of singles matches.
 
Sophomore Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) picked up a pair of wins on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the main singles draw, downing Florida’s Lukas Grief and Columbia’s Jackie Tang. Ross will face Florida’s Oliver Crawford in the semifinals.
 
The semifinal and championship singles matches will be played on Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The singles champion will earn a wildcard entry into qualifying for October’s Charlottesville Challenger. Sunday’s singles matches will start at 9 a.m.
 
Freshman Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) also won two singles matches on Saturday in the backdraw, defeating Tulane’s Dane Esses and Kentucky’s Enzo Wallart, to start his collegiate career 3-1. Senior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) also picked up a win in backdraw singles, downing Notre Dame’s Axel Nefve in three sets.
 
In doubles action, Lizen and freshman William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) picked up a win the consolation draw of the Orange doubles bracket, downing a tandem from Wake Forest.
 
Goetz and sophomore Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) will play backdraw singles matches on Sunday, with Goetz facing Tyler Schick of Tulane at 10:30 a.m. and Alhaqbani taking on Kento Yamada of Kentucky at 12:15.
 
The UVA Masters is a double-elimination tournament with three doubles draws and one singles bracket. Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State, NC State, Notre Dame, Tulane, Wake Forest and Virginia will be competing as individuals in the singles and doubles draws.
 
Live scoring and video will not be available for the matches, but results will be posted on VirginiaSports.com at the end of each day.
 
Admission is free for the tournament.
