Cavaliers Open Season against Penn State at Home

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host Penn State on Saturday (Oct. 6) in the program’s season opener at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavaliers will open the meet with the 1m and 3m boards at 9 a.m. Swimming events will begin at noon.
Admission to Virginia swimming and diving meets is free to the public. Public parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis at Slaughter Recreation Center and the parking lot closest to the West Gate at Scott Stadium.

Against Penn State
• In the last 10 meetings between the two programs, the Cavalier women hold a 9-1 record, while the Virginia men lead 8-2.
• The Cavaliers have won the last three meetings over the Nittany Lions, including last year’s dual meet in University Park, Pa.
• The two teams opened the season last year at Penn State with UVA winning 184-104 in the women’s competition and 151-149 in the men’s meet. The women’s team finished first in 14 events, while the men’s team placed first in eight.
• The Nittany Lions held a three-point lead (143-140) heading into the final event of the men’s competition, the 400-yard freestyle relay, but a first-place finish by the Cavaliers secured the dual meet victory for the team.
Virginia
• The Cavaliers return 12 All-Americans from last year’s team.
• Morgan Hill (Olney, Md.), Eryn Eddy (Loveland, Colo.), Megan Moroney (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and Vivian Tafuto (Hummelstown, Pa.) earned All-America honors at last year’s NCAA Championships. Hill paced the team by capturing All-American honors in five events, helping lead Virginia to a ninth-place finish on the national stage.
• Ryan Baker (Arlington, Va.), Keefer Barnum (Louisville, Ky.), Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain), Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.), Robby Giller (Wilton, Conn.), Bryce Keblish (Fairfield, Conn), Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) and Cooper Wozencraft (Houston, Texas) earned the national accolade during last year’s championships. The men’s team finished 29th at the NCAA Championships as Clark led the squad with three All-American honors.
The Nittany Lions
• The women’s team finished 29th at the 2017-18 NCAA Championships. Senior Ally McHugh placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle, capturing Penn State’s highest individual finish in program history. McHugh also placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.
• The men’s team placed 30th at the NCAA Championships scoring 14 points from senior diver Hector Garcia Boissier in the 1m and 3m dive.
• Both the men and women programs finished eighth at the Big Ten Championships.
