Cavaliers Open Four-Match Homestand

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia (4-8, 0-2 ACC) returns home to open a four-match homestand inside Memorial Gymnasium, as the Cavaliers host Florida State (6-6, 2-0 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and Miami (6-3, 2-0 ACC) on Sunday, Sept. 30 at noon.
GAME COVERAGE
Both matches will air on ACC Network Extra, which is available to authenticated subscribers of ESPN3 through WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Fans can also get in-game updates on the match’s live stats feed on VirginiaSports.com and on volleyball’s official twitter feed (@UVAVolleyball).
PROMOTIONS
Friday night is a Sabre Rewards event with all students in attendance receiving five points. In addition, the first 350 students at Friday night’s match will receive free Qdoba chips and queso along with a Hoo Crew t-shirt.
Sunday is Cavman’s Crew Day with autographs following the match.
VIRGINIA VS. FLORIDA STATE
• Virginia and Florida State meet for the 54th time on Friday evening with the Seminoles holding a 39-14 lead in the all-time series.
• Florida State has won the past 10 meetings in the series, dating to 2010.
• The two met twice in 2017, both 3-1 decisions for FSU.
• 10 of Virginia’s 14 victories in the series have come at home.
VIRGINIA VS. MIAMI
• Sunday’s meeting with Miami is the 24th in the series, with the Hurricanes holding a 13-10 edge all-time.
• Miami has won the past five meetings in the series, including a pair of five-set thrillers in 2017.
• The series is tied 6-6 inside Mem Gym.
MILLA IN THE MIDDLE
• Since making her first start against George Mason, Milla Ciprian (St. John’s, Fla.) has proven one of the Cavaliers’ most consistent options.
• In four starts, the rookie is hitting .314 with 25 kills. She’s added 15 total blocks in 13 sets.
• Against Pitt, she led the block with a career-high seven rejections, including a solo stuff.
BLOCKED BY HOOS
• After the opening weekend of ACC play, the Cavaliers are fourth in the league with 3.17 blocks per set.
• With 1.06 blocks per set, Chino Anukwuem (East Hanover, N.J.) sits 10th in the ACC this season.
• Virginia recorded 12 blocks against Pitt, marking the third match the Cavaliers have hit a dozen rejections this season.
• The 12 rejections rank sixth by a Virginia team in a three-set match in the rally-scoring era.
HISTORIC VICTORY
• Virginia’s last victory over Florida State came in 2010 when the Seminoles were ranked No. 25 in the nation.
• The victory was only the second over a ranked team in Virginia volleyball history.
• Virginia’s victory came in five sets, 25-18, 25-13, 18-25, 19-25, 16-14.
NOTING FLORIDA STATE
• The Seminoles boast ACC kill-leader and reigning player of the week, Payton Caffrey, who averages 4.37 kills per set.
• Caffrey is 25th in the nation in kills per set and 20th in points per set (4.94).
• Florida State sits ninth nationally with a .288 hitting percentage and 14th in kills per set at 14.21.
• The Seminoles also feature Taryn Knuth, who leads the ACC and is sixth in the country with 1.56 blocks per set.
NOTING MIAMI
• Miami enters the weekend 17th in the country with a .274 hitting percentage.
• The Hurricanes are the toughest serving team in the ACC, averaging 2.03 aces per set to sit fourth in the country.
