LONDON –Virginia men’s tennis freshman Brandon Nakashima (San Diego, Calif.) advanced to the third round of singles and the quarterfinals of doubles in the 2019 boy’s singles and doubles championships at Wimbledon in London, U.K.
 
Nakashima is the No. 6 seed in the singles draw and is currently the No. 7 ranked junior in the world. He opened play on Monday (July 8) with a 6-0, 7-6 (5) victory over qualifier Phuong Van Nguyen in the first round and followed it with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Nicholas David Ionel of Romania in the second round, but was edged by the 17-seed, Harold Mayot of France, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round.

Nakashima is partnering with Valentin Royer of France in the doubles draw. They downed the fourth-seeded tandem of Matheus Pucinelli De Almeida and Thiago Agustin Tirante, 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round and then picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory on Thursday over Flavio Cobolli and Dominic Stephan Stricker in the second round. They fell 6-3, 6-2 to the British duo of Arthur Fery and Toby Samuel on Friday in the quarterfinals. 
 
Nakashima still qualified to play in junior tournaments as he has not yet turned 18.
 
He was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year as well as being the only freshman named to the All-ACC First Team.
