Goetz, Pedroso Win VaSID All-State Top Honors
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia highlighted the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Men’s Tennis All-State Team released on Friday. The Cavaliers took home a pair of major awards and garnered four first team honors.
Sophomore Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) was named the VaSID State Player of the Year, while Andres Pedroso was named the State Coach of the Year for the second-straight season.
Goetz earned the state’s top individual player honor after winning the ITA Atlantic Regional singles championship during the fall. He was also ranked as high as No. 81 nationally in the ITA Singles Rankings in 2019-20.
Pedroso led UVA to a season-high national ranking of No. 10. The Cavaliers were undefeated against the state and had won six-straight before the season ended prematurely due to CoVID-19.
Goetz headlined the VaSID All-State First Team in singles where he was joined by teammates junior Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden). Söderlund and junior Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) earned All-State honors in doubles.
Söderlund, who was the state player of the year in 2019, was No. 1 in the preseason ITA singles rankings and finished the year as the No. 2 ranked senior in UTR rankings. Ross was ranked as high as No. 68 in singles and advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional in the fall. Soderlund and Lord garnered a spot on the doubles first team after being ranked as high as No. 35 nationally during the spring season.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
