One of the exceptions to the first/second place rule is in creating relays. For the 200 free relay, the top four finishers are the relay team (with the top two swimming the individual event), thusly giving Paige Madden her first official ticket to Tokyo. There is a cool tradition that those who are officially named to the team strike and then sign the drum.
