MUNGIA, Spain – Virginia men’s tennis sophomore Iñaki Montes (Pamplona, Spain) won both the singles and doubles titles at the Laukariz Open, an ITF World Tennis Tour 25k clay court tournament being held in Mungia, Spain.

Montes opened the singles tournament by battling to a 6-7 (3), 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory against Bruno Pujol Navarro before picking up three straight-set victories to advance to the final. On Saturday, he topped the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Akira Santillan of Australia 6-3, 7-5 in the final. Santillan is ranked No. 386 in the world.

Montes and partner Alex Martinez won third-set tiebreakers in both the semifinal and the final to secure the victory in doubles.

This is the second  career ITF World Tennis Tour doubles title for Montes who won a hardcourt title last year at the ITF WTT 25K in Bakio, Spain. This is his second time playing in a singles final after being the runner-up last summer at the ITF WTT 15K in Xatvia, Spain, and his first championship.

This is the second straight week that a Cavalier has won a title at a pro tournament in Europe. Last week, Chris Rodesch won the doubles title and was the runner-up in singles at ITF WTT 15K in Duffel, Belgium.

Montes advanced through qualifying last week at the ITF WTT 25K in Martos, Spain, advancing to the second round of the singles main draw and the semifinals of the doubles draw.
