CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s tennis sophomore Chris Rodesch competed in Davis Cup Europe Group III ties as part of the team from his native Luxembourg June 22-25 at the Tennis Club Bellevue in Ulcinj, Montenegro.

Luxembourg won Pool B with 2-1 victories against Montenegro, North Macedonia and Moldova, which ensured the team a place in the World Group II playoffs. Georgia and Cyprus will also advance to the World Group II playoffs. Luxembourg dropped Saturday’s playoff against Pool A winner Georgia 2-0.

Rodesch played singles and doubles over the four-day event, with three doubles victories securing wins for his team. Rodesch was edged in each of his three singles matches, each by close margins. He fell 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in his opener against North Macedonia and 7-5, 3-6 against Montenegro. In the Saturday’s finale, he was edged in a pair of tiebreakers to fall 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 against his opponent from Georgia.

Rodesch and Alex Knaff won their doubles ties against North Macedonia and Moldova, both times breaking a 1-1 tie. In the final match of pool play, Rodesch partnered with Raphael Calzi to again break the 1-1 tie and secure the pool B victory for Luxembourg.

This is Rodesch’s third time playing in Davis Cup ties for Luxembourg with a 5-2 overall singles record. Last year, he went 4-0 in his ties, including winning in straight sets against Iceland’s Anton Magnusson in the relegation playoff.
