CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team (0-0) opens the dual season by hosting a pair of matches on Sunday, Jan. 15 on the indoor courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. They will face UNCW (0-0) at 12 p.m and Richmond (0-0) at 5 p.m.

  • The 2022 NCAA Champions start the season ranked No. 1 in the ITA rankings
  • The team returns seven players from last year’s team, only losing one member of its starting lineup
  • The Cavaliers have four players in the ITA singles rankings: Chris Rodesch (27), Iñaki Montes (37), Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (45) and Bar Botzer (71)
  • Ryan Goetz and Chris Rodesch are ranked No. 17 in doubles
  • Montes was the ACC Player of the Year last year, going 22-5 overall in singles and 13-3 in dual matches. Montes was ranked
  • Goetz, who is in his fifth season with the Cavaliers, has 86 career singles victories
  • Botzer begins his fifth season of collegiate tennis (second at UVA) with a career singles mark of 115-30
  • Rodesch, an ITA Singles All-American last year, was ranked in the top 10 in singles and doubles in the preseason at seventh and ninth, respectively
  • Måns Dahlberg, a freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, joined the team last week. Two other freshmen, Ty Switzer and Douglas Yaffa, both joined the team in the fall


  • UNCW has won the CAA title in eight of the last 13 seasons and made the field of the NCAA Championship nine times in that same span
  • The team posted a 15-9 record last season


  • Richmond finished the 2021-22 season with an 11-11 record
  • Grad student John Walsh was a second-team All-A10 selection his junior season. He was 7-1 last year at No. 2
  • UVA alum Houston Barrick ’10 has been the head coach of the Spiders since the 2017-18 season
  • Virginia is 45-2 all-time against the Spiders and has won the last 12 meetings. Richmond’s last win against UVA came in 1994


  • The Cavaliers play a mid-week match at Liberty on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. in the Flames’ season-opener
  • Virginia returns home to host No. 11 Baylor on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m.
