MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Junior Matt Brownstread advanced to the finals of the 50-yard freestyle and Virginia finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay on Thursday night at the 2023 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Brownstead earned honorable mention All-America honors with his 12th-place finish in the 50 free, clocking a time of 18.92. Just .20 seconds separated the top four spots in the B Final.

UVA’s 200-yard freestyle relay closed out the night with a sixth-place finish. The team of Brownstead, senior August Lamb, sophomore Connor Boyle and sophomore Jack Aikins, respectively, finished in a time of 1:15.26.

Virginia is 11th in the overall standings with 53 points. California (184), Texas (165) and Arizona State (154) are the top three teams.

IN PRELIMS

  • Junior Noah Nichols finished 41st in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:44.48 and sophomore Tim Connery was 52nd (1:46.36).
  • Senior August Lamb was 34th in the 50 free with a time of 19.36 and sophomore Jack Aikins finished 41st in 19.50.

Friday’s events will include the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 3-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay.
