Virginia Faces Wake Forest Thursday in NCAA Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia men’s tennis team (25-5) faces Wake Forest (30-6) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The match will be played at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.

MATCH NOTES

• Virginia is ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA team rankings, but are the 3-seed in the championship
• Wake Forest is the 6-seed and ranked No. 6
• This is the second meeting of the year between the two teams. UVA won 4-3 in Charlottesville in the ACC opener on March 1. That match started outdoors but finished indoors
• The winner of the match will advance to face either 2-seed Texas or 7-seed Tennessee on Saturday, May 18 at 2:30 pm ET
• ACC Freshman of the Year Dylan Dietrich is on a nine-match win streak in singles (in completed matches) with a 21-5 record
• Senior Alex Kiefer has a 14-match win streak in singles. Kiefer’s last loss was in the ACC opener against Wake, falling 6-3, 6-0 against Luca Pow
• Senior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg leads the team in singles victories with a 26-14 record. He has 95 career singles wins at UVA
• Virginia has not lost a match outdoor since the NCAA Round of 16 match against USC on May 17, 2021
• von der Schulenburg and grad student James Hopper are tied for the team lead in doubles victories with 22 apiece
• Hopper, a 5-8 seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship with senior Iñaki Montes, was an eight-time All-American with NCAA III Case Western Reserve. With his seeding in the doubles tournament, he adds an NCAA Division I All-America honor to that tally. He picked up his 150th career doubles victory in the second round of the NCAA Championship

• The reigning NCAA Champions are looking for their seventh NCAA title and third consecutive
• This is Virginia’s 20th-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance
• Virginia has advanced to the quarterfinals in 17 of the last 19 NCAA tournaments, the semifinals in 12 of the past 16 and played in eight of the last 12 finals with six titles
• Virginia holds an 81-18 record in NCAA Championship matches
• Virginia and Georgia are tied for fourth with six team titles apiece. Only USC (21), Stanford (17) and UCLA (16) have won more
• Virginia is the No. 3 seed in this year’s championship. The Cavaliers were the No. 5 seed last year and No. 7 seed two years ago during those title runs
• Andres Pedroso has a 21-3 record as a head coach in NCAA Championships. As an assistant/associate head coach at UVA, his teams were 20-3, giving him a record of 41-6 in 11 NCAA Championships with Virginia
• Iñaki Montes is 11-1 in his career in singles matches in the NCAA team championship and 11-2 in doubles
• Chris Rodesch has 7-1 records in both singles and doubles
• Jeffrey von der Schulenburg is 8-3 in singles and 12-3 in doubles
• Alex Kiefer is 5-0 in singles and 4-3 in doubles. He did not compete in the tournament his freshman and sophomore seasons
• Måns Dahlberg is a perfect 6-0 in singles between last year and this year
• Virginia is one of two teams with both its men’s and women’s teams competing in Stillwater (Tennessee is the other)
• All eight of the top seeded teams in the championship advanced to the quarterfinals
