Alden Fontana joined the Virginia athletics program in January of 2023 as an assistant athletic trainer and works with the Cavalier softball program. Fontana also assists with the management of summer camps and serves as a preceptor in Virginia’s master’s program in athletic training.

He is a 2017 graduate of Quinnipiac with a bachelor of science in athletic training/sports medicine. As a student athletic trainer, Fontana worked with the Bobcats’ basketball, men’s soccer and nationally-ranked men’s ice hockey programs.

Following his undergrad service, Fontana served as a graduate assistant at Merrimack College, working with its men’s soccer and softball programs while obtaining a master’s degree in exercise and sport science. Fontana then served two years as an intern athletic trainer at The Ohio State University with the women’s softball program. During his time at OSU he also provided interim coverage to the nationally-ranked men’s basketball and men’s wrestling programs. He comes to UVA following a year-and-a-half long stint at James Madison, where he provided care to the women’s swimming and diving program.

Fontana holds certifications in Graston M1 Technique, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and was a recipient of the 2017 Connecticut Athletic Trainers Association’s Presidents Award.

A native of Duxbury, Mass., Fontana now resides in Charlottesville with his three-year-old rescue pup Archer.
