CLEVELAND – Virginia’s Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland) won his first round match in the 1998 NCAA wrestling championships with a fall against Bobby Hansen of UT-Chattanooga. His fall of Hansen took place in 27 seconds. He wrestles the third seed Eric Guerrero of Oklahoma State later tonight..

The other Cavaliers were not as fortunate in their first round matchups. Steve Garland (Middletown, NY/Middletown) lost to the #3 seed, Teague Moore of Oklahoma State, 11-8. Jason Mutarelli (N. Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) lost to Michael Lightner of Oklahoma, the #8 seed, 9-3. Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) fell to the fourth seeed, Bill Lacure of Michign, 7-1. Alex Leykikh (West Hartford, CT/Hall) lost to Neil Barnes of Lock Haven 7-5. Tom Shaw (Wichita, Kans./Derby), fell to the #5 seed, John Withrow of Pittsburgh, 9-1. Martius Harding (Baltimore, Md./McDonough) wrestled the #2 seed Tim Hartung of Minnesota and lost 10-1.

The Cavaliers continue tomorrow with action in the consolation brackets on Friday, March 20 at Cleveland State University.
