Cavaliers Shut Out Norfolk State 53-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Cavaliers recorded a pair of falls andtook five forfeits en route to a 53-0 shutout of Norfolk State on Saturday. Virginia’s Jim Harshaw recorded his team-leading ninth pin this season at 165 to notch his 32ndwin of the season, which also leads the team.
Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V.) started the match for the Cavalierswith a 6-1 defeat of Rafael Butts. Virginia accepted a forfeit at 125, andat 133 Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) defeated Derrick Green 11-9 to give theCavaliers a 12-0 lead. Virginia took another forfeit at 141 and at 149 MattOunsworth (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) recorded a technicalfall with a 15-0 defeat of Tiree Murphy. Virginia won by forfeit at 157 totake a 29-0 lead through six matches.
At 165, Harshaw pinned his opponent 1:22 into the match, and afterVirginia took a forfeit at 174, Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./BlairAcademy) pinned his opponent 5:55 into the bout. Craig Fenstermaker (HiltonHead, S.C./Northampton (Pa.)) accepted a forfeit at 197 to give theCavaliers six more team points, making the final score 53-0.
The 53-point margin of victory is the second-largest margin ofvictory in school history, five points short of the record set last yearagainst Howard. It is also the 13th time in school history that theCavaliers have recorded a shutout in a dual match.
Virginia (7-5-1) will face ACC rival Maryland this Tuesday, Feb. 16in College Park, MD. The match is slated to start at 7:30 pm.
