CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Steve Totten assisted on a pair of goals and sophomore Ryan Trout scored another unassisted as the University of Virginia defeated visiting Rider University 3-0 here Sunday in first-round action of the 1998 NCAA men’s soccer tournament.

UVa improves to 15-3-3 with the win, while the Broncs fall to 13-8-1. A crowd of 1,325 attended the game at Klockner Stadium as the Cavaliers ran their all-time NCAA Tournament ledger to 34-13-4.

Trout’s goal came on a penalty kick from 24 yards at the 8:51 mark, the earliest the Cavs have scored in a match since a Chris Albright goal at the 5:44 spot in the Virginia Commonwealth game Oct. 31. It was also the first opening period goal for the Wahoos since that game. Sheldon Barnes made the score 2-0 19:49 into the game with a header on the right side. Steve Totten dumped the ball off on the left side for Totten, who crossed to Barnes for the goal.

Chris Albright capped the scoring at the 29:01 mark on a shot from the center of the box 17 yards out. Totten assisted on that goal, giving him his first two-assist match since a Sept. 12 match against Maryland. The net gives Albright 20 goals on the season and he now stands all alone in fourth place on the UVa single-season goals scored list.

Brock Yetso turned in his eighth shutout on the season moving into sole possession of fourth-place in a season at UVa. He now has 15 on his career, also fourth at Virginia.

The win gave head coach George Gelnovatch victory No. 50 on his career. Gelnovatch becomes the first coach in ACC history to reach 50 wins by the end of his third season. His career record now stands at 50-10-9.

Virginia will now host South Carolina next weekend in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks defeated Virginia Commonwealth 2-1 Sunday in Columbia, S.C. The Cavaliers are 2-0-1 all-time against USC. The last meeting between the two schools was the 1993 championship game, which was won by UVa 2-0.
