COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Virginia won two individual events and one relay Saturday night and went on to claim the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference women’s swimming and diving championships title here at the University of Maryland’s Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.

It is the second straight title and third overall for the 19th-ranked Cavaliers, who outdistanced No. 21 North Carolina 766.5 to 699.5. Host Maryland, which totaled 446 points, placed third for its highest finish in school history. Clemson (429) was fourth, North Carolina State (417) was fifth, Florida State (409) was sixth, and Duke (154) was seventh.

Danica Wizniuk, a freshman from Virginia who won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke titles, was named the meet’s outstanding swimmer. North Carolina State senior Marica McKeel, who swept the one- and three-meter diving events, was named the meet’s outstanding diver. Virginia coach Mark Bernardino was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Two individuals met NCAA automatic qualifying standards with their performances Saturday night: Clemson’s Jennifer Mihalik in the 200 backstroke and Virginia’s Wizniuk in the 200 breast.

Here is a look, in sequence, at Saturday night’s events:

North Carolina freshman Molly Sullivan easily claimed the title in the 1650 free, posting a 10-second win over freshman Jenna Hough of Maryland. Sullivan clocked a time of 16:38.94, Hough finished second in a time of 16:48.37.

Clemson’s Jennifer Mihalik repeated her 1998 league title in the 200 backstroke and set an ACC record in the process by finishing first in a time of 1:57.97. Freshman Carina Tennessen of Maryland was second in 2:00.01.

Rebecca Cronk of Virginia captured her second individual title of the meet, adding the 100-yard freestyle crown to her 50-yard freestyle title. Cronk finished first in a meet record time of 49.49 to edge Meg McCubbins of Virginia (50.08).

The second ACC record of the night to fall came in the 200 breaststroke, when freshman Danica Wizniuk of Virginia clocked a time of 2:11.82 Led by Wizniuk, the top three finishers in the event were all freshmen. The win completed a meet double for Wizniuk, who captured the 100 breaststroke title on Friday night.

North Carolina cut heavily into Virginia’s lead by finishing 1-3-4-5 in the 100 butterfly. Tar Heel freshman Melissa Fiss led the way with a winning effort of 2:00.21, finishing just ahead of the Cavaliers’ Emily Carrig (2:02.20). The next three places all belonged to North Carolina — Kelly McLaughlin (2:02.30), Kristin Lozeau (2:02.42) and Ilana Kavadlo (2:03.67).

Marica McKeel, a senior from North Carolina State, captured the 3-meter diving event to go with her one-meter title she won on Friday. It is the third ACC diving title for McKeel, who won the one-meter event a year ago.

Virginia clinched the team title with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.
