Women's Volleyball Defeats Duke, 3-0

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Virginia volleyball team recorded its first conference win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Cavaliers defeated the Blue Devils in three consecutive games by the scores of 15-13, 15-7, 16-14.
The UVa offense was paced by Mary Frances Scott, who tied Duke’s Pam Gottfred with a match-high 58 assists. Scott also added 10 digs and five blocks for the Cavaliers. Claire Folga led Virginia with a team-high 17 kills to go along with eight digs and two blocks. The trio of Jessica Parsons (15 kills, 5 digs, 5 blocks), Deanna Zwarich (13 kills, 5 digs, 4 blocks) and Andrea Fischer (12 kills, 5 digs and 2 blocks) came up big for UVa. Katie Jones recorded a match-high 15 kills to add with her seven kills and Amanda Wells posted nine digs in the 3-0 victory.
Duke was highlighted by Jami Ediger (18 kills, 10 digs) and Gottfred’s 58 assists. Ashley Harris (13 kills, 11 digs, 2 blocks), Sarah Peifer (12 kills, 10 digs, 2 blocks) and Megan Irvine (12 digs, 10 kills, 4 blocks) contributed in the loss.
With the win, Virginia’s record improves to 12-2 overall, 1-1 in the ACC. The victory marks only the fourth time Virginia has defeated Duke in 27 meetings. With the loss, Duke falls to 6-6 overall, 1-1 in the conference. The Cavaliers will return to home action on Friday, (Oct. 2) when Virginia hosts the Clemson Tigers at Memorial Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
