CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina won eight of ten individual bouts, including two pins, to defeat the Cavaliers 32-6 tonight in Chapel Hill. The lone Cavalier winners were Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Craig Fenstermaker (Hilton Head, S.C./Northampton (Pa.)).

In the night’s opening match at 141 pounds, P. J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was taken down with 0:01 left in the third period and lost 6-4 to Tar Heel Josh Cowley. The Cavaliers were down 9-0 after the first three matches before Harshaw decisioned Dan Calhoun 4-0 in the 165-pound bout. Fenstermaker’s 3-0 decision over Ty Roofner at 197 made the score 19-6, but the Tar Heels won the final three matches for the final score. The marquee match up of fifth-ranked Chuckie Connor of UNC against #10 Matt Roth of Virginia at 125 went to the Heels by a score of 2-0.

With the loss, the Cavaliers drop to 3-4-1 overall and are now 0-1 in conference action. They travel to Norfolk, Va. to face in-state rival Old Dominion on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2:00 pm.
