Women's Lacrosse USA Under-19 Team Wins World Championship 15-8 Over Australia

PERTH, AUSTRALIA – The United States Under-19 women’s lacrosse teamdefeated the defending champion Australians 15-8 today to win the 1999IFWLA Smarter than Smoking World Championship.
Theresa Sherry (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School), who sang the nationalanthem before the match, was named the player of the match. Captain LaurenAumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep/University of Virginia) led allscorers in the game with three goals and three assists as the Americansavenged their loss in 1995 in the first World Championship match.
Kelsey Twist (Cockeysville, Md./Roland Park Country) started thescoring for the champions with a goal at the 29:50 mark, and the Americansnever looked back. The Stars and Stripes had a 9-4 advantage at the break.
The goalie tandem of Amy Price (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School)and Meghan McInnes (Ruxton, Md./Roland Park Country) combined for 10 saveson the afternoon in helping the defense stifle the Australian attack.
Commented USA head coach Wendy Kridel, “They played great from oneend of the field to the other.”
The USA went undefeated in the tournament as they joined the USAElite Women’s Lacrosse team that captured the World Cup in 1997. The Eliteteam also defeated the Australians to retain possession of the cup.
