GAME 18: #12 Virginia 3, #10 Duke 2, overtime – The Cavaliers got the treat, not the trick, as Jess Coleman’s (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) corner shot rocketed into the cage in overtime, giving the #12 Cavaliers a 3-2 decision over #10 Duke. It was Coleman’s second goal of the game, both coming on corner shots and both assisted by Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy).
Coleman put the Cavaliers ahead with 14:12 remaining in the first half as she connected on a corner. Virginia went ahead 2-0 as Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) poked the ball to Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) just 90 seconds before halftime. The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead into halftime after holding the Blue Devils to just one shot in the half.
In the second half the Blue Devils tied the game with a two-goal barrage in a five minute span. Corey Ceccolini connected on a corner with assists from Angie North and Courtney Sommer at the 24:58 mark, and five minutes later Chrissy Ashley chipped in a loose ball in front ot the cage to tie the game.
With just over a minute to play, Duke had a corner and Ceccolini’s shot hit the post and went out of play. The teams ended regulation with a 2-2 tie.
In the overtime period, the Cavaliers had a breakaway with a 2v1 but got the ball trapped in their feet to nullify that chance. They were awarded a corner two minutes later but were not able to get off a clean shot. Duke also was awarded a corner in the overtime period but they were not able to control the pass and the Cavaliers were able to clear the ball. On Virginia’s second corner of the period Coleman connected for the game-winner, her fifth of the season.
Virginia’s Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) played the entire time in goal and recorded three saves on the day.
Goodloe’s two assists on the day give her 18 for the season, the second-highest total for a sophomore in school history, behind Lindsay’s 19 in 1997. She also now has 23 in her career, which is ninth all-time at Virginia. Lindsay now has 43 career assists, which ranks second at Virginia and eighth in the ACC in history.
Individual Notes:
Seeing Double: Jess Coleman notched both the first goal and the game-winner against Duke. She now has 21 goals on the season, which is the second-highest total in school history for a sophomore. Her 52 points is also the second-highest total for a sophomore and ranks fifth all-time for a single season. She was named ACC Player of the Week for her efforts.
Sweet Sixteen: Carrie Goodloe has 18 assists this season, which ranks 5th all-time for a single season and second all-time as a sophomore at Virginia. She has also moved into ninth all-time for career assists at UVA.
Lo is over the hill: Laura Lindsay’s 15 assists this season give her 43 for her career, which ranks second all-time. Lo ranks 8th all-time in the ACC and is one of only 11 people in conference history to record 40 or more assists in a career.
A Perfect 10: Elwell’s assist gives her 155 career points, which places her fourth all-time at Virginia in scoring and tenth all-time in scoring in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Looking Ahead:
Dealing with Duke, deja vue: The Cavaliers now have won five in a row against Duke, their longest win streak over the Blue Devils in school history. But the Hoos need to win one more to advance to the semifinals of the ACC tournament, something they have not had to do since 1992 when they were the #4 seed and faced then-#5 Wake Forest in the first round. The Cavaliers are 1-1 vs Duke in the ACC tournament, losing to them in 1990 2-1 and then defeating then-#4 Duke 2-1 in overtime in the semfinals in 1997. Overall, Virginia is 7-16 in ACC Tournament history but has advanced to the finals in both 1997 and 1998.
