CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Prior to the start of the 2000 baseball season, there were a few questions concerning the outlook of the 2000 Virginia Cavalier baseball club before UVa even took the field. Would Virginia improve from last year and be a better team this season? Who was going to step up to be one of UVa’s team leaders? Could the Cavaliers improve their overall and conference record? Will Virginia’s first-year class have an immediate impact? How far could UVa go into the conference tournament?

UVa was coming off a 21-35 season in 1999 where it finished 8-15 in conference play. The ’99 Cavaliers ended their season by going 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Tournament. However, the 2000 season was a new year – a fresh slate for the Cavs – and they looked to improve upon the ’99 teams results……and did just that.

Although Virginia took a large step forward in the 2000 season, that step didn’t happen right away. The Cavaliers hand their hands full to start the new season as Virginia began its 2000 schedule with a three-game series at Louisiana State University. LSU, tabbed as “The Program of the 90’s,” had won three National Championships in the 1990’s (1991, 1993 and 1996). UVa would find itself playing in front of three sold-out crowds of nearly 8,000 spectators per game at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. The Cavaliers dropped all three games (8-0, 13-2, 13-4) to begin the season 0-3.

After the LSU series, UVa returned home to Charlottesville looking to record its first win of the season as it faced the Old Dominion Monarch’s in Virginia’s home-opener on Feb. 16th. The game turned out to be a scoring marathon, as UVa and ODU played to a 14-14 tie in a game that was called after eight innings of play due to darkness. UVa was now 0-3-1.

The Cavalier had a three-game stretch up next with a game against the George Mason Patriots and two contests against the Liberty Flames in which they could pull their record even at .500 with victories in each game. However, things didn’t go as UVa had anticipated, and the Cavaliers dropped all three contests to fall to 0-6-1 through seven games.

Although Virginia was winless through its first seven games, the Cavaliers began to turn things around from that point on as the season progressed. After its 0-6-1 start, Virginia would go on to finish 26-25 the rest of the way, including a rigorous and grueling stretch through a competitive ACC schedule.

UVa hosted the Bucknell Bison in a three-game series at the UVa Baseball Field and came away with three victories after the series to improve its record to 3-6-1 overall. The Cavaliers won their first game of the season with a 6-1 victory over Bucknell before taking the next two contests by the scores of 6-5 and 9-6, respectively.

Virginia would go on to win six of its next ten games to improve to 9-10-1 overall before facing the Princeton Tigers in a two-game set. Included in that stretch of ten games were several monumental feats for the UVa baseball team. On March 6th in Richmond, Va., the Cavaliers earned a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over the VCU Rams. In that contest, UVa not only gathered its first road win of the season, but Tim LaVigne also became both Virginia’s all-time leader in saves (14) and pitching appearances (72) in the victory. LaVigne would eventually go on to further extend those records as he ended the season with 18 saves and 92 appearances, both marks are school records.

Three games later, Virginia head baseball coach Dennis Womack coached his 1000th career game as a head coach in the second game of a doubleheader with Eastern Michigan on March 11th. Three games after that, Womack would add yet another monumental notch in his coaching career by gathering his 500th victory as a head coach with a 5-2 victory over the Princeton Tigers on March 15th. Ironically, the victory gave Virginia its first and only winning record for the season as UVa stood 11-10-1 overall.

With the exception of a few non-conference games mixed into its schedule, the rest of Virginia’s slate mainly consisted of ACC opponents. UVa’s first conference foe would be the N.C. State Wolfpack. The Cavaliers dropped their first two games 16-13 and 4-2 before posting their first ACC win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C. on March 19th.

Virginia would return to home action in its next two ACC series and would post 1-2 records against nationally ranked Wake Forest and Florida State in the three-game series. Against Wake Forest, UVa lost 4-0, won 10-9 in a dramatic come-from-behind victory in its last at-bat in the bottom of the ninth, and dropped the third game 13-5. In the FSU series, Virginia lost 9-6 before upsetting the #1 ranked Seminoles 2-1. The Cavaliers lost the last game of the series by the score of 10-4.

After a 16-8 loss to Richmond on April 4th, Virginia found itself standing with a 15-18-1 record overall, 3-6 in the ACC with an upcoming seven-game road trip on the schedule. The Cavaliers knew they had to come away with some wins or the trip could put a tailspin on their season.

Virginia started the road trip off with a three-game series with the Duke Blue Devils and came away with two victories in the three game played. UVa topped Duke 10-4 and 12-3 before falling 10-1 to improve to 17-19-1 overall, 5-7 at the mid-point of conference play. The Cavaliers next opponent would be one, if not the, toughest opponent they would face all season long – the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech (the eventual ACC regular season and tournament champions) would turn out to be the only ACC opponent that Virginia did not beat in conference play. The Yellow Jackets handed the Cavaliers three consecutive losses by the scores of 8-4, 5-1 and 12-6. After a 10th inning 7-6 loss at Virginia Tech on April 19th, Virginia returned home to lick its wounds and to regroup in a regular season ending stretch of games that would set the tone for UVa’s solid ACC Tournament run.

Starting with a 6-5 victory over North Carolina on April 21st, the Cavaliers would close out the regular season portion of its schedule by winning seven of its last 13 games. Included in that stretch of games was a pair of 2-1 series victories over the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Maryland Terrapins. UVa topped UNC 6-5, lost 5-4, then earned a 10-6 decision to claim the series. After a 4-2 setback to Maryland, Virginia went on to beat the Terrapins 13-10 and 9-5 to win the series with the Terps.

UVa then went on to post its first neutral site victory of the season by defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies by the score of 5-4 in Salem, Va. on May 2nd. UVa’s last opponent on its regular season and conference schedule would become a vary familiar one – the Clemson Tigers.

Virginia entered the Clemson series with a record of 23-27-1 overall, 9-12 in the ACC. The Cavaliers would go on to face the Tigers in five of their next seven meetings, including two contest in the ACC Tournament. In the conference series finale with Clemson, UVa lost 9-7 before shutting out the Tigers to record its second shutout victory of the season by the score of 11-0. Virginia had also defeated UNC-Greensboro by the score of 1-0 back on April 26th. But Clemson bounced right back and handed the Cavaliers an 11-point loss of their own by beating UVa 20-9 in Virginia’s last regular season game of the season on May 14th.

The University of Virginia Baseball team ended the regular season portion of its schedule with a record of 24-19-1 overall, 10-14 in the ACC. But the season would not stop there, as UVa would go on to open some eyes in the 27th Annual Atlantic Coact Conference Baseball Tournament held in Fort Mill, S.C.

Virginia entered the ACC Tournament as the #7 seed, and few people considered the Cavaliers to be a likely tournament challenger. That opinion was soon tossed out the window when UVa became one of three teams remaining after the tournament field of nine teams was narrowed down to three after one game was played in the semi-final round.

After a 9-5 first round loss to #2 seed Clemson on May 17th, the Cavaliers responded by defeating #6 seed N.C. State 9-5 in ten innings in the second round before upsetting the two-time defending ACC Tournament Champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons (#4 seed) by the score of 8-3 in the third round of the tournament. The win propelled UVa to the semi-final round of the tournament to face the Clemson Tigers once again.

After Florida State was eliminated by Georgia Tech in the first semi-final contest, UVa was one of three teams still alive in the tournament. However, Clemson topped Virginia 12-5 in the semi-final game, ended the Cavaliers 2000 season with a overall record of 26-31-1 overall, 10-14 in the ACC, 2-2 in the ACC Tournament.

The Cavaliers had improved their win totals over the ’99 squad by winning five more games overall (26 in 2000, 21 in 1999), two more game in the ACC season (10 in 2000, 8 in 1999) and two more games in the ACC Tournament (2-2 in 2000, 0-2 in 1999).

Several members of the 2000 Virginia baseball team were honored at the conclusion of UVa’s season. UVa’s Jon Benick (Glen Lyon, Pa./Greater Naticoke), Tim LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) and Robbie Marvin (Ashburn, Va./Stony Brook) were named to the 2000 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Teams. Benick was a First-Team selection, while LaVigne and Marvin gathered Second-Team honors. Benick (first base) and LaVigne (shortstop) also earned a spot on the 2000 ACC All-Tournament team.

Although Virginia ended its season without a trip to the NCAA Tournament, none of the Cavaliers were hanging their head after a season full of improvement behind them. Even after a slow start, UVa became known as a team that never quit. With the 2001 season just over the horizon, it is yet to be seen how high next year’s team will climb in its quest to reaching the top. But with a major core of its team returning and several newcomers added to the mix, Virginia promises to be a team that will be exciting to watch once again.

Cavaliers advance to ACC Tournament semi-final: Entering the ACC Tournament as the #7 seed, not many people gave Virginia a chance to win the 2000 ACC Baseball Tournament. But after the Cavaliers played three games and recorded a 2-1 record heading into the semi-finals, UVa began to make believers out of a lot of doubters.

After a 9-5 first round loss to #2 seed Clemson, Virginia bounced right back in the second round with a 9-5 comback win over the #6 seeded N.C. State Wolfpack in 10 innings. Virginia went on to upset #4 Wake Forest by the score of 8-3 in the third round before facing the Clemson Tigers for the second time in the tournament. LaVigne was tied for first on the squad with two triples, third on the team with 12 doubles and fourth on the club with four home runs. Himes becomes UVa’s long-ball leader: With two more home runs against Maryland on 4/29, UVa’s Ben Himes extended his team-high home run mark to nine. The first-year right fielder from Austin, Texas has become a power-threat to opposing pitchers with his ability to “Go Yard.” Teammate Jon Benick, who led the Cavaliers with 10 home runs in 1999, is currently second on the team with seven HR’s.

Virginia tops 1999 ACC win totals during Maryland series: With its 13-10 victory over Maryland on April 29th, UVa tied its ACC win total >from the 1999 season with eight. UVa snaps string of five consecutive one-run games with UNC with 10-6 win: The Cavaliers and Tar Heels have played one another as close as you can get the past two seasons. Prior to Virginia’s 10-6 win on April 23rd in Charlottesville at the UVa Baseball Field, UVa and UNC had played in five consecutive one-run games dating back to the 1999 ACC season series.

Last year (’99), the Cavaliers lost three consecutive games at Chapel Hill, N.C. to UNC by the scores of 10-9 (4/16), 3-2 (4/17) and 6-5 (4/18). Winning the close ones: The Virginia baseball team knows wins aren’t easy to come by, they must be earned and are sometimes a battle to achieve. Virginia is 9-3 in one-run games with wins over Bucknell (5-4), George Mason (4-3), Virginia Commonwealth (8-7), Eastern Michigan (7-6), Wake Forest (10-9), North Carolina (6-5), UNC-Greensboro (1-0), Virginia Tech (5-4) and a one-run victory over #1 ranked Florida State (2-1).

Wyant leads Cavaliers to victory over Richmond: Hunter Wyant became the first Cavalier to hit two home runs in a game since Brian Sherlock accomplished the feat against Seton Hall on March 1, 1998, as Virginia rolled to a 11-2 victory over Richmond (3/28). Wyant (2-5, four RBI, two runs) was one of five Cavaliers to post multiple-hits in the contest .

Ben Himes and Robert Word also became the first Cavalier duo to hit consecutive home runs in a game since Brian Sherlock and E.J. Anderson accomplished the feat vs. Wake Forest on April 24, 1998.

Down, but not out: In Virginia’s second game of a three-game weekend series with Wake Forest (March 25th), the Cavaliers found themselves down by the score of 6-0 after the first half of the first inning was completed. But UVa never gave up, and outscored the Demon Deacons 10-3 >from that point on en route to a dramatic come-from-behind victory. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and runners on second and third base for the Cavaliers, Virginia’s Tim LaVigne recorded the game-winning hit on a two-run RBI single to left field that lifted Virginia to a 10-9 victory.

State Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C. on March 19th when he hit a two-run, game-winning single that scored teammates David Stone and Robbie Marvin to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish. The victory was UVa’s first ACC win of the 2000 season.

LaVigne breaks career saves mark at Virginia: In gathering his third save of the 2000 season vs. Virginia Commonwealth on March 6th, senior closer Tim LaVigne broke the school record for saves by gathering his 14th career save. After notching three as a freshman in 1997, LaVigne led the squad for a second consecutive season with six in 1998. He added two more saves last season and has recorded seven saves this season. His 18 saves ranks first all-time at UVa, breaking Todd Ruyak’s previous record of 13 saves which he amassed from 1989 through 1992. Here is where LaVigne currently stands on the Virginia all-time saves chart:

Player Sv Seasons
1. Tim LaVigne 18 1997-present
2. Todd Ruyak 13 1989-92
3. Greg Haden 8 1976-79

Should LaVigne lead the team in saves again this season, he would be the first Cav to top the team in that category for three consecutive seasons since Ruyak in 1990, 1991 and 1992. No other UVa player has ever accomplished that feat.

LaVigne breaks career appearance mark at Virginia: Senior closer Tim LaVigne appeared in his first game of the season against Old Dominion on February 16th. That gave him 67 appearances in his career, fifth in UVa history. LaVigne has since went on to break Don Melroy’s school record (1990-93) of 72 appearances after posting 26 more appearances this season. With his appearance in Virginia’s game with Virginia Commonwealth on March 6th, LaVigne broke the record at UVa for most career appearances with 73. Womack picked up the 450th victory of his career on March 4, 1998, when the Cavaliers captured an 18-4 win over William & Mary.

Will Parker….who is that guy? Will Parker has quickly made a name for himself on the Virginia baseball pitching rotation. After beginning the season as UVa’s student trainer, the left-handed pitcher from Suffolk, Va. has become one of Virginia’s top pitchers in the rotation. Parker made his first career start this season against Eastern Michigan in Virginia’s 12-4 victory as the lefty improved his record to a team-best 4-0 mark. He also posted a team-low 0.68 ERA as the Cavaliers entered their series with Princeton.

Will Parker named ACC Pitcher of the Week: UVa LHP Will Parker (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 13th. Wyant’s previous career-high for hits in a game was three, and he became the first Cavalier to gather four hits in a game for the 2000 season.

LaVigne establishes school record for HBP: Senior shortstop Tim LaVigne was plunked on the left arm in the seventh inning on March 2nd against William & Mary. That gave him 21 on his career, breaking the previous school mark of 20 set by Justin Counts from 1993 to 1996.

LaVigne finished his career at UVa with 51 total HBP in his career, with 20 coming last season. After being hit by a pitch eight times in the last 12 games of last season, LaVigne broke his single-season school-record in 1998 of being hit by a pitch 17 times with 20 plunks last year. The senior also set a school mark April 24 against Maryland when he was hit three times, one shy of the NCAA record. LaVigne ended the 2000 season with a team-high 14 HBP.

Virginia hands VCU first loss at The Diamond: In earning their second win on the road in the 2000 season, the Cavaliers beat previously undefeated at home Virginia Commonwealth for the first time this season. The Rams entered their contest with UVa with a 10-0 mark at home. Virginia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, only to fall behind by the score of 7-5 before mounting a late comeback en route to a 8-7 victory at The Diamond.

Floyd lifts Cavaliers to first road win of 2000 season: Sophomore center fielder Michael Floyd hit a game-winning RBI single to right field in UVa’s 4-3 victory over George Mason on March 2nd in Fairfax, Va. With two outs and teammate Ryan Kalamaya on third base, Floyd dropped a fly ball inside the right field line to score Kalamaya, breaking open a 3-3 tie game in the top of the ninth inning. The run eventually became the game-winning marker, lifting Virginia to its first road victory of the 2000 season.

Forget about February: The month of February will not go down in history as one of the most memorable baseball months at UVa. The Cavaliers finished February with a record of 3-7-1 overall. After starting the season off 0-3 with a three-game series at LSU, the Cavaliers were able to end their three-game losing streak with a 14-14 tie against Old Dominion in Virginia’s home-opener. UVa would drop its next three contests (two games with Liberty, one game with George Mason) before recording a three-game series sweep over Bucknell. The Cavaliers then dropped their final game of February when Virginia lost a 9-3 decision at William & Mary. UVa hopes to get back to its winning ways as the month of March rolls around.

Cavaliers record first win of 2000 season: It took eight games into the season, but Virginia finally got what it was looking for – a win. Virginia recorded its first victory of the 2000 season with a 6-1 victory over Bucknell (2/26) in the first game of a doubleheader. The Cavaliers followed their first win of the season with another victory, this time a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in UVa’s last at-bat.

Shrout pitches one-hitter: Senior fourth-year RHP Kevin Shrout pitched an outstanding game against Bucknell (2/26) en route to guiding UVa to its first victory of the 2000 season. Shrout pitched a one-hitter after facing 25 Bison batters while recording nine strikeouts on the afternoon.

Floyd records career-high three RBI against GMU: Michael Floyd posted a career-high three RBI while going 1-3 at the plate in the Cavaliers 6-4 loss to George Mason on February 22. Floyd then followed that outing with a two-RBI game at Liberty the next day where he finished 2-4 at the plate in UVa’s 6-5 loss to the Flames.

Benick’s back!: Virginia C/1B/DH Jon Benick snapped out of a three-game 0-11 series with LSU with a 3-5, RBI, run outing against Old Dominion in the Cavaliers home-opener. One of Benick’s hits, a double, was a blast to center field that just fell short of leaving the UVa Baseball Field for a home run. However, Benick did gather his first home run of the season when he delivered a solo shot over the right-center field fence at Liberty on Feb. 23rd after finishing 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Wyant sizzles against Liberty: Cavalier infielder Hunter Wyant had a huge afternoon at the plate against Liberty (Feb. 23). The junior went 3-5 at the plate and hit Virginia’s lone double of the afternoon.

LaVigne racks up career-high five RBI: SS/P Tim LaVigne recorded a career-high five RBI after going 2-6 at the plate and scoring two runs in UVa’s home-opener against Old Dominion.

Four Cavs’ record multiple hit games vs. ODU: Four Virginia players: Jon Benick, Tim LaVigne, Robbie Marvin and Hunter Wyant, posted multiple hits in UVa’s home-opener against Old Dominion. Benick recorded a game-high three hits, while the trio of LaVigne, Marvin and Wyant tallied of pair of hits in the contest.

Starting off on the wrong foot? Well, not exactly. But the Cavaliers did not have the best of outings when they stepped foot in Alex Box Stadium to begin their three-game series with the LSU Tigers. Virginia lost all three games by the scores of: 8-0, 13-2 and 13-4. The ‘Hoos played the Tigers tough, but could not topple the Top-10 team on their home field. In all three games, Virginia fell behind in the first inning of play and could never take over the lead. UVa was behind 2-0 in game one, 1-0 in game two and 2-0 in game three after the first inning.

Himes shines in UVa debut: If Ben Himes plays as well as he did in the LSU series all year, watch for great things to come from the first-year outfielder. Himes went 4-9 (.444) at the plate and scored a run in the series. Himes recorded a hit in his first career at-bet in a Cavalier uniform on 2/12. He also tallied Virginia’s first triple and double of the season against LSU.

Giraldo goes yard: Fourth-year player Luis Giraldo smacked Virginia’s first home run of the season on 2/13 against LSU. In the top of the seventh inning with a runner on base, Giraldo blasted a shot over left-center field at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. He finished the afternoon 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Virginia Tabbed Sixth in 2000 ACC Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll: The Atlantic Coast Conference’s nine head coaches picked the University of Virginia baseball team to finish sixth (tied with North Carolina State) in the 2000 ACC Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers return 17 lettermen and seven starters from last seasons team that finished 21-35 overall, 8-15 in the conference.
