University of Virginia’s Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made her first career start in the cage for the Cavaliers and pitched a shutout to the Ohio State Buckeyes as the Hoos won 2-0 today in St. Louis at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. White made six saves in the game and kept the Buckeyes scoreless for the first time this season as the Cavaliers improved to 1-1 this season.
The Cavaliers were able to get a corner in the first five minutes of play, the first of their eight on the afternoon, but they were not able to convert nor did they capitalize on a penalty stroke in the first half, leaving the game scoreless at the break.
Ten minutes into the second half of play Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) slotted a ball to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) on the endline who pulled around the keeper and scored to put the Cavaliers up for good. Virginia notched an insurance goal fifteen minutes later as Kristy Sott (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) intercepted a ball at midfield and started an attack that finshed as Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) fed Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) in front of the net. Gerfen pulled around the keeper and stuck the ball in the cage for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead for Virginia.
The Virginia defense held the Buckeyes to one corner on the afternoon. The Cavaliers will travel to Richmond on Thursday to face in-state rival Richmond on Thursday at 4:00. They will then open up the home portion of their 2000 campaign against Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 8. Game time against the Wildcats is 4:00 at the University Hall Turf Field.
