CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team remained undefeated in the ACC with an 82-41 victory over Maryland tonight in front of 3,791 people at University Hall. The victory moves the Cavaliers to 11-4 overall on the season, and pushes their ACC record to 3-0.

Sophomore forward Schuye LaRue led all scorers with 24 points, but fell three rebounds short of extending her four-game double-double streak. LaRue also had five steals on the night, tying her career high. Senior forward Svetlana Volnaya added 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 4-of-7 clip from behind the three-point arc.

Virginia took the lead for good early in the first half on the strength of a 10-0 run. The Cavaliers led 9-8 four minutes into the contest before a pair of baskets from Volnaya and a basket each from LaRue and Marcie Dickson gave the Hoos an 18-8 lead. Two minutes later Virginia reeled off 17 unanswered points to stretch its lead to 29. The Cavaliers led 43-18 at the half.

Virginia shot a staggering 73 percent from the field – 55 percent from three-point range — in the first half. Although the Cavaliers cooled off considerably in the second stanza, shooting just 48 percent from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc, they still managed to shoot 59 percent for the game. Maryland was led by Deedee Warley’s 13 points.

With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 33-21 all time against Maryland. Virginia returns to action Sunday (Jan. 7) when the Cavaliers travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech. Maryland dropped to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The Terrapins will travel to Florida State on January 10.
