Virginia Beach, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team dropped its season opener to Old Dominion, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 7) in Virginia Beach, Va. ODU won all three doubles matches to clinch the lone doubles point en route to the victory.

The Cavaliers’ No. 1 singles player, third year Amy O’Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), played her first dual match since undergoing surgery in August. She lost to Nataly Cahana, 6-4, 6-1. Second-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C. / Broughton) won her match at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, over Ana Radeljevic. Meanwhile, fourth-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas / Memorial) fell at No. 3 singles to Lara van Rooyen, and first-year Laura James (Fairfax, Va. / Centerville) lost at No. 4, 7-6, 6-4, to Mily Kannarkat. Second-year Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J. / Millburn), and fourth-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) kept the match close with wins over Julia Sotiriu (7-6, 4-6, 10-7 in a tiebreak) and Patricia Araujo (6-1, 6-3), respectively. But their efforts weren’t enough to overcome Old Dominion’s doubles sweep.

ODU got off to a crisp start when all three of their doubles teams captured convincing wins. Cahana and Radeljevic beat Shweer and Williams at No. 1, 8-0, while Kannarkat and Sotiriu bested O’Donnell and Kim at No. 2, 8-1. Tuchband and Weaver fell at No. 3 to van Rooyen and Araujo, 8-2. Virginia rebounded with three singles victories, but could not make up the early deficit.
