CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 49 University of Virginia men’s tennis team upset in-state rival No. 34 Virginia Commonwealth, 5-2, Wednesday (April 4) at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches to clinch their first victory over the Rams since a win in the NCAA Regionals in 1998.

Virginia’s No. 1 doubles team of Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), which is ranked third in the nation had its hands full with VCU’s Frank Moser and Florian Marquardt. The Rams’ team is the No. 2 doubles tandem in the country, which made for an intense match at first doubles. Vahaly and Montgomery took advantage of an early break and continued to hold serve for the 8-4 win. Jonathan Chou (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) won their doubles match at No. 3, 8-6, to seal the lone doubles point.

Vahaly and Montgomery also won their singles matches. Vahaly defeated Marquardt at No. 1,6-3, 6-3, while Montgomery dispatched of Moser at No. 2, 7-5, 6-3. Hunter and third-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) also won their singles matches, pushing Virginia to its final margin of victory.

UVa returns to action Saturday (April 7), when the Cavaliers travel to Durham, N.C. to face third-ranked Duke. The Cavs will face N.C. State on Sunday (April 8) in their second Atlantic Coast Conference match of the weekend.
